A Family BusinessBuilt for W. Main & Sons Ltd in 1880, this impressive Victorian mill kept the family’s shop stocked up with animal feed, seeds and fertilisers, as well as processing grain. Workhorses were used to transport the goods into the market square (now the Portman building society) – the stables were situated where our workshops are today. |
The Post-War BoomDuring WW1, the Mill was used as warehouse space for the Australian army, but after the war, it was business as usual, only with lorries instead of horses and electricity providing light and power to the machinery. From 1920-50, the business flourished, with manual labour still central to the process. Up to 25 people were employed, all fit and healthy enough to move the bulky 250lb sacks of grain. |
From Acid House To ArtworkThe historic building has since been a carpet warehouse and an illegal rave venue, but in 1994 Michael Main, the grandson of the original owner, rescued it and opened The Gallery. The Cafe was established the following year by Michael and Deborah Fox and, since then, studio spaces have sprung up to give talented artists and designers the space to create and add another dimension to this ever-evolving history. |

The Bakhtiyar Gallery ideally situated in the High Street specialises in Persian hand-knotted Carpets, Runners and Kelims and is a centre of excellence for Persian Carpets.
In the gallery there is a great diversity of carpets from Persia including fine city pieces, large decorative and antique pieces along side smaller nomadic pieces.
Masound Mazaheri-Asade who has access to the bazaars underground vaults in Persia chooses stock for the gallery for the craftsmanship involved. He regards carpets not merely as floor coverings but works of art.

Established in 1985, the gallery sells paintings, watercolours and sculpture by contemporary artists, alongside pictures from 1880 - 1940.
The gallery has always maintained a policy of displaying work by artists that we believe create interesting work, underpinned by a consistency of skill in their painting or sculpting.
Contemporary work is selected to encompass a range of artistic styles. On view in the gallery, within a broad price bracket, there is always a selection of sculpture and pictures reflecting this stylistic range and subject matter.
Exhibitions held are by contemporary artists, either as solo or mixed shows as well as themed exhibitions.
The earlier work on view is primarily by British artists, with a particular emphasis on those twentieth century painters who stylistically moved forward away from the formal confines of painting of the nineteenth century.
